Maeve’s Internship Reflection

As 2022 comes to an end, so does my time as the Social Media and Digital Marketing Intern for Burkhart Marketing Partners. It is hard to believe that my internship is coming to a close. It feels like my first day was just last week! Going into this internship, I really did not know what to expect. This wasn’t my first internship, but it was my first one at a marketing agency, so I knew it would be different from the rest. Now, I want to take time to reflect on what I have learned and gained from this internship experience.

My Internship Experience

I applied specifically for the Social Media and Digital Marketing internship at Burkart because it was an area that I had some experience in, but I knew I still wanted to learn more about it. I have learned so many valuable skills that I wouldn’t have otherwise if not for this internship experience.

Before interning at Burkhart, I was not confident in my graphic design skills. I have used Canva before, but I never really loved the way my designs looked. This internship helped me get the hang of Canva right away, and now I consider myself to be a better graphic designer. I also learned how to apply design skills differently for different brands, which is unique to a marketing agency.

Writing has always been my strong suit, however, I had never written a blog post until this internship. I have written essays for class, but this was totally different. The creative freedom I was given with the blogs I got to write about was great, and I think it helped me improve not just my writing skills, but my promotional writing skills especially. This is an important tool that I will continue to use in other internships and jobs, and even in class.

One of the coolest things I learned at Burkhart was how to track and apply analytics. I am not a numbers person and I have always hated math, so this is not something I expected to like. However, after pulling metrics and data about social accounts and our website, I quickly gravitated toward the idea. Creating social posts is cool, but actually getting to see the results of that post and how it performed is more beneficial and rewarding. This is my first internship where I really got an inside look at analytics, and I enjoyed learning all about it.

My Takeaways

After a great almost four months at Burkhart, I am walking away with plenty more skills under my belt that I will carry with me in future internships and jobs.

I obviously learned a lot about marketing and social media, and I learned plenty of skills on how to successfully market a brand. However, there are more skills than just what were listed in the job description that I am leaving with.

I learned how to stay organized with all my tasks and assignments. Working for a marketing agency and multiple clients can be challenging when you have different things to do for each client. It can get messy, so staying organized is very important. That is a very valuable lesson that Burkhart taught me. Having checklists and taking notes are two skills that I will take with me in the future.

Learning how to work with a team is the other truly valuable thing I learned while working for Burkhart. The office camaraderie, and overall compatibility, was very strong; I always felt very welcome, even as just a temporary intern. I got to work with everyone here and get a glimpse into each of their jobs and what makes them unique. I learned so much from the people at #TeamBurkhart, and I hope that whatever job I end up at in the future has a company culture just like this one.

Overall, I am sad that my time with Burkhart has come to an end, but I am very thankful for all the things I have learned by being a part of this team. I will take these skills with me into my last semester at Butler University and beyond, into my career. Thank you, Burkhart!
